The 1st Marquess of Buckingham wanted a new bridge so that he could invite his friend, future King George IV, to his home, without worrying that the old stone bridge near the Woolpack Inn might collapse with a Royal Prince on it!
The Marquess had the bridge built in 1805, and you can see his coat of arms on one side of the bridge and a swan on the other. Before this there wasn’t any bridge here at all.
