This cottage at the end of Castle Street was extended in 1875 by Edward Swinfen Harris; his design included sgraffito panels decorated with sunflowers.
Sgraffito is the Italian word for decorating by scratching through surface layers to reveal a lower layer of a different colour.
Edward’s sunflowers were really modern! The Arts and Crafts movement, who used the same ideas, didn’t become popular in the UK until 1880.
