Despite evidence of Romans and Celts nearby, Buckingham didn’t become a town until the Saxon times. Castle Hill and the loop of the River Great Ouse helped the Saxons and their leader Bucca defend the town.
The name Buckingham stayed after Normans took over and by the 1100s Buckingham Castle was built where you stand now. To start with, it would have been made of circles of wooden walls (a motte and bailey castle). In the medieval times the Castle was upgraded to stone; the Castle itself is now long gone but some of the stones remain in the walls of homes in Nelson Street and back gardens of Well Street.
