This cottage at the end of Castle Street was extended in 1875 by Edward Swinfen Harris, his design included sgraffito panels decorated with sunflowers.
Sgraffito is the Italian word for decorating by scratching through surface layers to reveal a lower layer of a different colour.
Edward’s sunflowers were really modern! The Arts and Crafts movement, who used the same ideas, didn’t become popular in the UK until 1880.
