The metal railings in this area are the restored remains of the cattle pens.

Live animal markets took place in Buckingham right up until the 1950s. For safety, cows, calves and bulls were always kept apart, with the cows and calves kept in the cattle pens, and bulls in the bull pen. The view isn’t quite the same as it was, as there were additional railings creating the bays for each group of animals.

Residents might remember that you used to be able to park a car in any of the cattle bays you liked as the whole area was flat, without kerbs or bollards.
